Mx. Leece earned their Bachelor’s degree with honors from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, where they studied audio engineering, chamber music, and guitar, and their Master’s degree from Mannes College The New School for Music in New York City, where they studied classical guitar, free improvisation, chamber music, and composition. Starting their career as a freelance music teacher and audio engineer in Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY, in 2017 Mattie was hired as a visiting professor of music at their alma mater, Bloomsburg University, to run the undergraduate audio engineering program and teach world music, guitar, and many other courses within the department of music, theatre, and dance, eventually earning the position of assistant professor of music.
As a musician, Mx. Leece has performed in concerts, competitions, festivals, and master classes throughout North America and Europe, appearing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy, the Crescent City Jazz Festival in New Orleans, the Hamilton Guitar Festival & Competition in Ontario, the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society International Festival & Competition—where they received an honorable mention, and Lincoln Center, American Sawdust, and Spectrum in New York City, to name just a few.
Coming from both the academic conservatory setting and the ad hoc world of creative self-expression, Mattie aims to help each of their students achieve the goals and outcomes unique to them. Whether it’s studying Bach, or creating experimental, DIY art (and everything in between!), Mattie strives to meet everyone where they’re at, and help them get to where they want to go.
